Barcelona were ready to offer Valdes 8M euros per season

If the representatives of Victor Valdes had let the intentions of the Catalan club’s interlocutors be “aired”, then maybe they would have meditated a bit more on their “irrevocable decision” to not renew Valdes’ contract when it expires in June 2014, thus cutting off all links with FC Barcelona.

Barcelona’s offices were crystal clear on one particular matter; if the differences of opinion were economical, then it would not have been a problem for Barca. Bartomeu, Zubizarreta and Sanllehí were willing to offer the keeper a step up in salary that was equivalent with top earners such as Xavi Hernandez, Andrés Iniesta and David Villa.

It would also have been Barcelona’s way of letting the keeper know that they recognized his merits for the titles and trophies won by the club over the last decade.

Tito Vilanova had already recognized that Valdés had been a decisive factor in the team and deserved a long stay at the Catalan giants because it would be difficult to find a replacement of his calibre.

By paying Valdes around 8 million euros per season was one of the ways to give the Barcelona stopper the recognition he deserves. The contract renewal had been very well studied by FC Barcelona and would not have supposed an economic problem for the club in the future.

The decision by Valdes not to renew has opened up much speculation as to the future of the goalkeeper. Sources close to the player have said that the intention of Victor Valdes is to give Barca time to find a substitute so that the club can benefit with a transfer move next June.
