Barcelona target Mats Hummels is said to be now closer to making a deal with Premier League giants Manchester United after the Catalans have dropped out of the race to sign him.
Hummels was touted as the next Carles Puyol but surprisingly, the Catalan giants have pulled out to turn their attention on Valencia’s Jeremy Mathieu as the perfect replacement for the retired Barça legend.
Hummels has had a great World Cup and has a winners medal to show for it and would have been a great addition to the Catalan side. Louis Van Gaal can now take a sigh of relief as Barcelona have changed tack.
It was reported that Barça were in the hunt for the £20million-rated German international but their interest in him has cooled off. United’s interest in 25 year old Hummels started when defender Nemanja Vidic said he would be leaving the club and although David Moyes is credited with a possible move for Mats Hummels, Van Gaal has continued where the ex United manager left off.
Louis Van Gaal needs a general at the back in the shape of Carles Puyol and Mats Hummels fits the bill perfectly. With Rio Ferdinand gone along with Vidic, the Dutchman needs experience at the back to keep youngsters like Jones, Smalling and Evans in check.
It is believed that Van Gaal will do his best to lure the Borussia Dortmund star to the Premier League before the start of next season.
