Man City looking to sign Valdes from Barca

Victor Valdes stop against France
The English club is seriously considering signing a great goalkeeper for next season. City’s first objective is to try and recover Hart’s performance in the coming months, but the Chilean coach is beginning to lean toward a new signing. Hart has made numerous errors this season, both in the Premiership and the Champions League, that have cost his team defeat.

Joe Hart made some incredible mistakes against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, especially in the first goal when he was unable to stop a shot from Franck Ribéry. Despite its power, it wasn’t a difficult shot to stop for a top class keeper like Hart. In the Premier League Hart has made errors where several goals have been conceded from headers in the six yard box or failing to come out for the ball.

If Hart doesn’t continue, Valdes is in pole position to go to Manchester City. In fact, sources close to the player revealed that Valdes was offered to City last season when it came to light that the keeper would be leaving Barcelona. At that time the answer was no because Hart was performing at a high level and was the undisputed number one keeper for England. But now things have changed and Hart’s performances are more questioned than ever. Hart wasn’t on the field for last weekend’s England vs Chile match where Barca’s Alexis bagged a brace in his country’s 0-2 win.

However, the problem of signing Valdes is timing. City wants to wait until end of season to make a final decision on their keeper and the club also has to consider what to do with Pantilimon whose contract ends in June. Hart will return to play and then they will assess whether to keep him or let him go. If they decide to offload Hart then they will take the plunge and sign Valdes or someone else. Iker Casillas’ name also came up, but he’s not the kind of keeper the English club want.

Valdes has not said ‘yes’ mainly because he is not free until January to negotiate officially with a team, although it is clear that both Barcelona and the player himself are preparing his future. The question now is how long can Valdés hold out without giving City an answer, because French club Monaco are beginning to think that the keeper is rejecting their offer of 10M euros, as suggested by the media.

Valdes is aware that City may open the door fully to him for next season and therefore will try to hold out giving them an answer. Another factor that may tip the balance is the Champions League. At present, the City would not qualify for next season’s showpiece, while Monaco is uniquely positioned to be classified in third position, although it’s still early days for both sides.

Meanwhile, the Catalan club is still thinking what to do about next season. The club does not want to advance any news, but the idea is that the two current keepers will be off loaded. Jose Manuel Pinto did not want to comment on this, stating: “I always struggle to earn my place and train to start in the first team. Next year is still a long way off and you have to respect all opinions,” he said.
