It hasn’t taken too long for Gerardo Martino to fire off a few jibes pointed in Real Madrid’s direction.
“He’s a very good player, but the numbers seem to me are a lack of respect for the world in general,” said Martino during Saturday’s pre-match press conference ahead of FC Barcelona’s trip to Malaga.
The new Argentine coach slammed the Gareth Bale deal as ‘disrespectful’ given the world’s financial climate, forgetting that Barca had already dug deep into their pockets to fund the £50m they paid for Neymar.
Newspapers and Real Madrid fans all over were also quick to pick up on past Barca deals including Leo Messi’s brush with the Spanish inland revenue for unpaid taxes.
Mentions of deals such as 40M Euros for David Villa, who went to Atletico Madrid for a little over 5M euros or other deals where Barca lost money on namely Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Dmytro Chygrynskiy.
Martino’s statements have set the Spanish press on fire with over 4,000 comments on the article by Marca and El Mundo Deportivo notching up 303 comments. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell you which one of the two websites is Real Madrid friendly, does it?
A lot of the comments, even from Barca fans, suggested that Martino stick to football and not get involved with the politics of the club. Barca’s values should not permit the coach to voice his views like this.
Pep Guardiola bit his tongue on many occasions and this is where the difference lies. It seems that Martino is not afraid to have a swipe or two at their main rivals. We can thank our lucky stars Mourinho is still not at Real Madrid otherwise we would have a ‘symbolic bloodbath’.
