United give David De Gea pay rise to deter Barcelona advances

According to British newspaper ‘The Sun’, Manchester United will increase the salary of David de Gea to hold off any possible advances from FC Barcelona who hopes to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer market as the club cannot rely on Victor Valdes, whose continuity at Barca is not 100 percent certain.

22-year-old David De Gea, who was signed from Atletico Madrid, has a contract with the Old Trafford club until 2016.

However, De Gea’s name has been associated with FC Barcelona as a possible ‘future signing’ and the Red Devils, who long for the signature of Barca’s Thiago Alcantara, wanted to point out that they are not interested in letting their prized goalkeeper go.

David de Gea currently earns around 64,000 euros a week and will now pocket about 87,000 euros with his pay rise.

Manchester United hope, with his pay rise along with a new two-year contract extension, that it will force the Catalan club to look elsewhere for a new keeper for when Victor Valdes finally decides to move on.

Pepe Reina from Liverpool is emerging as favorite to keep goal at the Camp Nou but other names such as Ter Stegen (Borussia Mönchegladbach) or Guaita from Valencia have also been heard.
