Carles Puyol: “I thought about quitting football, but not going to AC Milan”

Barca captain Carles Puyol, who was speaking at a news conference on Friday, spoke of  his ordeal regarding the injuries that have plagued him this season.

“My objective is to arrive 100 percent fit for the new season,” he said.

“My idea is to complete the three years on my contract and I hope to play until I am 40 and retire here.”

“While I’ve been out I had considered quitting football, but not going to AC Milan. The only thing on my mind at the moment is Barcelona,” he added.

On his continuity in the Spanish national side Puyol said: “Now is not the time. I said to the coach (Vicente Del Bosque) that I wasn’t ok and that he shouldn’t count on me”.

Carles Puyol then recalled one of the toughest moments: “After surgery the doctors told me that in four to six weeks I could be fit and ready to go, but it would usually take around four months to recover well.

Now I’m better but I have not been able to participate hardly at all this season. I did go to see the president (Sandro Rosell) and told him that if I wasn’t ok, I wouldn’t be fulfilling my contract.”

It certainly has been a tough year for the captain and he really has been put through the ringer this season with his injuries, especially his knee and the dislocation of his left elbow last October.

Carles Puyol is famous for his quick recoveries but even he had to admit that “If the problems continue next season I will have to quit. These things happen in football.”

The captain has only make 13 appearances in La Liga and four in the Champions League this season.
