Alex Song, a rock against Mallorca

As number two coach Jordi Roura said at a the press conference after FC Barcelona demolished Mallorca by five goals to nil, defender Alex Song had a “great game.”

However, the performance of this untamed lion was only eclipsed by goals from Cesc Fabregás (3) and Alexis Sánchez (2) and by the official return of Eric Abidal. Nevertheless, the Cameroon international deserves special mention and not just because Mallorca manager Gregorio Manzano called him a tough player to get past but he because he played an excellent game to silence his critics just as Alexis and Cesc both did.

Tito put him in Busquets usual position and Alex Song ended up with figures not unlike those of Xavi Hernández concerning well-directed passes – he completed 108 out of 115 with a success rate of 94%.

Song was noted not only for his fluid game in a starting eleven that had 7 players from the youth program, but for his football and criteria shown and transmitted at all times to his teammates in both the midfield and at the back.

Alex Song is also a talisman for FC Barcelona – with him on the field, Barca has never lost. He has played in 14 games, of which the Catalan club has won 13 and drawn just 1.

Apparently, Alex Song didn’t just shine on the field and drew lots of attention to the flamboyant outfit he was wearing after the game.

After the match the player was seen wearing tight fuscia coloured trousers, which were finished off with some rather jazzy black boots embellished with pink, blue and fluorescent green chains that only Alex could get away with.

Alex Song was a rock on Saturday night against Mallorca and if Tito Vilanova decides to start him for Wednesday’s clash with PSG, he wouldn’t be out of place.
