Official: Xavi Hernandez to pen contract extension on Monday

xavi hernandez to sign new deal

FC Barcelona confirmed on Wednesday through an official statement that midfielder Xavi Hernandez will extend his current contract with the Catalan club until 2016 on Monday.

Many Barca fans had already assumed that Xavi from Terrassa, which is just outside Barcelona, would be the next to pass through the offices of the club to seal a contract extension. After Xavi Hernandez comes the turn of Argentine maestro Leo Messi.

Xavi, who turns 33 on Friday, has been cited for 1600 hours on 28th January and will renew his contract until June 30th, 2016.

Barca captain Carles Puyol renewed his contract on Tuesday. Now it’s the turn of Xavi Hernandez to be followed by Messi who renews until 2018, possibly at the end of next week.

This is good news for Barca fans everywhere and guarantees a certain stability to the Catalan side.

Meanwhile, Barcelona take on Malaga tonight in their second leg crunch game at La Rosaleda in La Copa del Rey. Number two coach Jordi Roura has said that Barca will be going all out for a win and we can be sure of an excellent game.

The Barca team is in high spirits despite hitting a bad patch and losing to Real Sociedad at the Anoeta stadium last weekend by 3 goals to 2 in the dying minutes of the game.

In last night’s clash between Valencia and Real Madrid, the game ended in a 1-1 draw with the Merengues going down to 9 men due to Fabio Coentrao and Angel Di Maria being shown red cards. Captain Iker Casillas had to go off after receiving a kick from team-mate Arbeloa and Real have now made their passage to the semis more difficult.
