Could Pepe Reina leave the Kop and reign in Barcelona?

pepe reina could return to Barcelona

After Victor Valdes’ announcement that he will not renew his contract in June 2014 means that Barcelona has to put on their skates and lineup a new number one keeper pretty soon.

There have been rumours of Barca looking at the possibility of young Belgian star Thibaut Courtois, currently on loan to Atletico Madrid from Chelsea and even Manchester United’s David De Gea.

Alex Ferguson may consider sending the 22 year old back to Spain after a series of blunders that have cost United points – the latest one being on Sunday when De Gea’s awful punch led to Clint Dempsey’s injury time equaliser that cost the Reds 2 valuable points against Tottenham.

There are also concerns that the young keeper is homesick and his singer/actress girlfriend Edurne is staying in Madrid while he’s in Manchester. Language problems are also a concern and De Gea has found it difficult to bond with teammates.

Sir Alex Ferguson therefore may entertain a bid from FC Barcelona and cut his losses by sending the Spaniard back home.

One name that has been heard these past few days is that of Pepe Reina, currently at Liverpool.

Pepe Reina actually came through the ranks at Barcelona with Victor Valdes and is no stranger to Barca’s setup and culture – so could be a good choice for the Catalans.

Reina’s father Miguel, who was also a keeper at Barcelona and Atletico Madrid seems to think his son would be an ideal replacement for Valdes.

Miguel Reina said:

“I am absolutely convinced Pepe would be more than delighted to return.

“Barcelona made him an upstanding man from the time he arrived at 12 until he left. He would be the ideal keeper for them.”

Barca have a lot to think about and it will be no mean feat trying to replace Victor Valdes, one of the best keepers in the world.

  1. i think he has been a great keeper for us,but he has had a few long dips in form i cant see barca taking him i dont think he is playing good enough for barca they will have the choice of any keeper they want.his farther has been out of order coming out with what he has said as if barca dont take him it will leave a bitter taist does his farther not no that the loyal liverpool fans have been paying his wages and before he comes out talking to papers he should show them fans respect the way we have always been behind his son.
