Guardiola shocks Premier League by Choosing Bayern Munich

Ex Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has shocked not only the English Premier League but the rest of the footballing world by signing with German giants Bayern Munich.

Guardiola was only speaking yesterday about the possibility of joining an English club ahead of the FA’s 150th year anniversary and was courted by clubs such as Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea. Chelsea’s Billionaire owner Roman Abramovich was even prepared to break the bank by offering Guardiola an unprecedented 22Million Euros per season for his services. We spoke about the possibility of Guardiola coaching Bayern Munich at the beginning of December  as Bayern had already had talks with Guardiola’s brother Pere, but this decision has come out of the blue.

But after months of speculation, the ex Barca coach has chosen to take over at Bayern from July. Guardiola has signed a three-year deal at the Allianz Arena and is still on his sabbatical in New york.

Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had this to say about the deal:

“We are very pleased that we have managed to convince the football expert Pep Guardiola, who was coveted and contacted by many top clubs, to come to Bayern Munich.
“Guardiola is one of the world’s most successful coaches and we are sure that he can bring a great deal of sparkle notonly to Bayern Munich but to German football in general.”

Guardiola will take over from 67 year old Jupp Heynckes who has decided not to extend his contract beyond the summer. Heynckes informed the German club of his plans to retire when the season finishes before Christmas.

Bayern Munich are currently sitting pretty at the top of the Bundesliga and are 9 points clear of their closest rival, Bayer Leverkusen. Next month the German club will meet North London club Arsenal in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had this to say about Heynckes:

“As a club and as Jupp Heynckes’ friends we have to show understanding for this decision. We have to accept it and we have to respect it. “During personal talks with Jupp Heynckes we assured each other that we will do anything we can, and now even more, to have a successful second half of the season 2012/13 where we want to get the title to Munich.”

This will be an interesting challenge for Pep Guardiola and maybe less pressure. I’m sure he made the right choice by choosing Bayern Munich and he has a very interesting project on his hands. Lots of Guardiola fans will be following and watching his progress to see what he manages to squeeze out of the top German outfit.

Comments

  1. He never signed a three year contract at Barca. First he signed a two year contract followed by two single year contracts which were making fans players and top Barca chiefs uncomfortable always worrying whether he will stay or not. I knew that should he leave spain, no other top team would allow that. Tito is proving that Barca can be even better. Hope guardiola does the same as well otherwise, he will be like Rikaard.
