Leo Messi is one of the greatest footballers the planet has ever seen and yesterday he made history by breaking Der Bomber Gerd Müller’s 40-year old goal scoring record for the most goals netted in one calendar year. It’s an incredible feat for such a young man and he can only go on to greater things.
According to the official website of FC Barcelona there are four big goal scoring milestones that Leo Messi has yet to reach but one by one the little Argentine seems to be breaking them.
Barca’s all time top scorers
At the moment Leo Messi is the top scorer in the history of the club regarding official matches and above Cesar Rodriguez. However, Messi occupies third place among the top scorers in all Barcelona games whether official or friendly. The leader is Paulino Alcántara with 369, second is Josep Samitier 333 with Messi bringing up the rear with 305 goals.
For Argentina
Gabriel Batistuta is the quintessential goalscorer for Argentina. He scored 56 goals for his country between 1991 and 2002. Batistuta is followed by other greats such as Hernan Crespo (35) and Diego Armando Maradona (34). Right now, Leo Messi is fourth in the list with 31 goals and of the four, he is the only one still playing for Argentina.
The Spanish League
The legendary Telmo Zarra is the best ever scorer of the Spanish league’s history with 251 goals. Right now, Messi is at ninth place in the standings with 192.
As well as Zarra, the Barca striker also has on his horizons Hugo Sanchez (234), Raul (228), Di Stefano (227), Cesar (226), Quini (219), Pahiño (210) and Edmundo Suárez (195).
The Champions League
Raúl González Blanco (Raúl) is also the top scorer in the Champions League. He managed to net a healthy 71 goals in the competition. Leo Messi is second with 56, the same as Dutchman and ex Manchester United and Real Madrid star Ruud van Nistelrooy. These statistics exclude the UEFA qualifying and preliminary rounds.
Time shall be the justification factor.
