Barca thrashes Getafe by 4 goals to one

Barcelona thrashed Getafe last night by four goals to one in a fine display where Leo Messi got a brace and David Villa got on the scoresheet, too. The first goal came from Adriano.

Barca started off the match without Messi or Alexis and Puyol went off with a knee problem.

This victory at the Coliseum means Barca’s fourth victory, a victory without brilliance and Messi coming on as substitute – he took just 30 minutes to resolve the game and put Getafe out of their misery. It was a rather poor Getafe team that didn’t have anything to do with last year’s Getafe. They were not able to take advantage of a couple of instance where Barca let them in the back door. That seems to be the norm with Barca, if you fail on the one or two chances that the Catalan team might leave you, get ready, because there will not be any more coming!

Tito, who was in the stands seeing out his sanction, left all the usual Barca artillery on the bench. Messi had hardly trained this week as he came back from playing for Argentina this week a bit under the weather.

Tello, Thiago and Montoya

It was time therefore for other players to step up and shine, especially Martin Montoya and Christian Tello. Thiago, too deserves a mention because he’s just come back after four months out of action. Carles Puyol and Cesc Fabregás also found their way back into the starting eleven. Although Cesc’s form has been doubtful so far, Tito used him as a false striker as there wasn’t much strike-force up front.

At the start of play Getafe started giving the ball away to the visitors although there where just a few occasions where they could have solidified their legend status as “giant killers”. It didn’t happen for Getafe however, and Barca had them on the rack.

Tello had a chance early on and the Thiago Alcantará hit the cross-bar. Getafe refused to bring it to Barca and they paid the price. There weren’t that many goal chances for Barca but it was just a question of time before they came raining in.

After 30 minutes Barca’s goal finally came after Pedro Leon’s shot was stopped by Valdés without problems. Valdés’ clearance was quickly converted into a counter attack by Cesc who found Adriano who made no mistake.

The second half began with the threat of Messi warming up on the sidelines who would come on for the last half hour of the match. Puyol made way for Mascherano who injured his left leg and Luis García brought on Álvaro Vázquez who made his debut for the Madrid side.

Pedro was brought down and Messi converted the penalty, putting the game beyond Getafe. Minutes after Pedro found Messi who scored his second of the game and sixth this season. David Villa came on for the last 15 minutes of play and wanted some of the action, too. Cesc found him and Villa duly converted the ball in which was his only chance of the match.

This leaves Barca eight points clear of eternal rivals Real Madrid who had a nightmare down in Seville. A poor game in which Mourinho lamented: “In this moment, I don’t have a team”. Real got beaten by a goal to nil and leaves a lot of questions to be answered.
