Leo Messi wants the Balon D’Or to stay with Barca

FC Barcelona star Leo Messi said on Wednesday that he would love for the next Balon D’Or player to be in the Blaugrana’s the dressing room, hinting at his fourth consecutive distinction or the first for either Xavi Hernandez or Andres Iniesta. And the little Argentine ensured that it would be “well deserved.”

“Hopefully, Xavi or Iniesta will win the Golden Ball, they have done so much and I said this last year. Either of them would be deserving of it for winning the European Championship, but there is still plenty of time for winning the award” Messi said at a press conference.

In this regard, he acknowledged not knowing how to calculate the award but expressed his willingness to remain a Blaugrana. “I do not know how the people vote and I do not know on what basis they vote but when you win major titles it must be important. It is six months away and a lot can happen until January but I would like the Balon D’Or to stay in the Barca locker room for another year and the more we are nominated for this award, the better, “he added.

However, the Argentine maestro acknowledged that the winning of major titles “strengthens” the candidates place in the struggle for the Balon D’Or by pointing out who won the La Liga, Real Madrid with Cristiano Ronaldo, but reiterated that much remains to be decided. “There is still a long way to go before we know the new winner and we don’t even know the names of the nominees yet,” he said.

“The people who decide who gets the award are journalists and their peers. It could be iker Casillas – he’s a player and could win it,” he said, noting the possibility that the award could fall into the hands of the captain of Real Madrid and keeper of the current Spanish double European and World champions.

When asked about the statements of Cristiano Ronaldo during the Euro 2012 Championships alluding to the elimination of Messi with Argentina in the Copa America, or the fact that the fans would shout ‘Messi, Messi’ at the Portuguese player from the stands, the Argentinian remained on the sidelines. “It’s nothing I have control over and have nothing to do with it. It’s not a problem either,” he said.
