French international and Barca player Eric Abidal is still recovering from a liver transplant operation that he underwent successfully earlier this year. Abidal left the hospital some days ago and there is a lot of good news for the player, as the doctor who performed the operation, Juan Carlos Garcia-Valdecasas said that “any return to playing with Barca is entirely up to him. Obviously, time will tell, but if he responds well, nothing will be able to stop him playing for the first team again”.
On the TV program ‘Efectivament’, which was shown on the Catalan regional channel TV3, the doctor acknowledged that “the liver can regenerate itself completely” and reminded viewers that “when a patient arrives at hospital with a living donor, he is not “queue jumping” – it is simply the beginning of the organ transplant process”.
He also stated that the “waiting lists for organ transplants are for those who are waiting for an anonymous cadaver donor”. Perhaps many people thought that Eric Abidal was jumping the queue with his liver transplant and as he is a footballer he might be given some type of preferential treatment. However, this is not the case as was highlighted in the program on TV3.
It would be great to see “Abi” playing again with the first team and as the doctor pointed out, only time will tell and it depends on him. We wish him all the best.
