Barca win and so do Real Madrid

Barcelona FC temporarily cut the gap to three points last night after beating Real Mallorca 0-2 but then Real Madrid stormed to a 5-1 victory at the Bernabéu by thrashing Real Sociedad and restoring their 6 point advantage.

Both sides got off to a good start and Barcelona were fielding a 3-4-3 formation when little Leo did the business at the half hour mark. Leo drove in a free kick that found the net and both Alexis and Busquets failed to get on the end of it to make sure. It didn’t need any help as it found the net anyway.

Thiago was sent off later in the match just before the 60 minute mark for a handball incident which I suppose was debatable. You win some you lose some! Messi later on hit the post and it was a goal from Gerard piqué that finally put the Mallorca side to bed with a 0-2 scoreline.

The break for Barca came after 24 minutes from a 35 yard free kick. The Argentine was finally credited with the goal but it did look like Alexis provided the final whisker of a touch to see the ball home and in the back of the Mallorcan net. Messi thus netted his 35th goal of the season with this strike.

It wasn’t the best of Barca and Iniesta had a bit of a nightmare first half and seemed to be running out of ideas. The second half got under way and it was pretty much of the same. The moment of controversy came when Thiago was adjudged to have handled the ball after already sporting a yellow card. The ref got out his red card and sent Thiago off. I suppose it’s one of those 50-50 decisions and although a lot of people are saying that Thiago’s arms were in a natural position as the ball his the this top right shoulder/arm, all I can say is that it didn’t look too natural to me – I’ll have to watch that one again!

Luckily a man down is no big deal for Barca especially when playing minor sides and Mallorca were still no threatening the “blaugranas” too much.Guardiola then made a couple of changes, bringing on Martin Montoya as he switched back to a four-man defense, and then Seydou Keita for Pedro who was also having a poor game.

With just ten minutes to go and Barca fans getting a little edgy as in this stage of the game a Mallorca goal would produce an undesirable draw, Piqué made sure Barca went home with three well deserved points. Carles Puyol played a one two with Messi that hit the post and Piqué found the net with a rebound.

This week Barcelona face AC Milan in their Champions League clash.
