Barcelona FC boss Pep Guardiola says that the club might have to look at alternative travel arrangements ahead of the UEFA Champions League final in London if flights are delayed by the volcanic ash cloud like last year.
Just a year after Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull left 10 million travellers stranded worldwide with its ash cloud disrupting European air travel, another called Grimsvotn is threatening to do the same.
Barcelona’s travel plans last season were upset by the natural disaster and they were forced to undertake a two-day bus trip to Milan to face Inter in their semi-final match – a game they lost 3-1. Now, Guardiola hopes the situation does not mean more travel woe for the Spanish champions as they prepare to play Manchester United at Wembley.
“We hope the volcano stays asleep for a few more days and allows our fans to get there,” Guardiola said. “We will do what [the experts] tell us to do. If that means travelling on Wednesday or even tomorrow then so be it.
“If not, we will travel on Thursday as originally planned. If they say don’t worry, we’ll relax; if they say get a move on, we will. What they say we will do, we will do. We will try to plan as far ahead as possible.
I suppose if by Thursday there are still problems with the volcanic ash cloud, Barcelona FC will have to either hop on a coach or a combination of coach/train. Whatever happens Barcelona will be in London for the final at Wembley on 28th May 2011.
