Iniesta stalling on contract renewal over wages

Andrés Iniesta

Andrés Iniesta wants more than 12M euros a season

Economic differences are impeding the renewal of the midfielder with the player viewing the 12 million euros proposed by the Catalan club to be insufficient.

The initial intention of FC Barcelona was to get the renewals of both Iniesta and Pique signed sealed and delivered before that of Andoni Zubizarreta. But the director of sports has already reached an understanding with Barcelona to extend their cordial relationship until June 2016, which will take place next Tuesday. But there has been little progress with the midfielder or with Pique, at least publicly.

Toni Freixa, spokesman for the FC Barcelona board said yesterday that negotiations with Iniesta “are taking their course” and said that no deadline has been fixed and extending the midfielder’s contract would not have to happen in 2013 if the player didn’t want it to. Iniesta still has a few years left to go on his current deal and is tied to the club until 2015. The current negotiations would see Iniesta at the club until 2018. The midfielder would then be almost 34 years old and would be practically hanging his boots up as a lifelong Barca player.

But economic differences are hindering the signature of the player from Fuentealbilla. The Catalan giants are offering 12 million euros per season, which appear insufficient for an essential player for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team.

What are your views, do you think that Barca should pay Andrés Iniesta more than 12M euros?
