The final and irrevocable decision of Barca’s goalkeeper Victor Valdes not to renew his contract with the club in June 2014 has got the Catalan club thinking of who will be the replacement for the five-time winner of the Zamora Trophy once he leaves the club.
This also leaves another big question: Where will Valdes be heading once his contract expires?
Possible destinations for the Barcelona keeper include Paris St Germain, Manchester City and Liverpool. But he could also be heading for Milan, Manchester United or Russian outfit Anzhi where ex Barca forward Samuel Eto’o is playing for large sums of money. Other rumours place Valdes in the German Bundesliga, maybe with Guardiola or even Qatar where David Beckham had a very good offer to end his football career after leaving LA Galaxy last December.
Even Victor Valdes himself said last summer during a mini promotional tour of Brazil that he did “not rule out playing in Brazil” and was something that he would have to consider together with his wife.
In a statement to Brazilian sports journal Lance! Victor said: “having a Brazilian sponsor, referring to the sports brand ‘Penalty’, who knows what the future may hold.”
Victor may be off to the land of the Copacabana Beach and the Sugar Loaf Mountain but wherever he ends up, he will surely fit in. He’s a world-class goalkeeper who hasn’t had the international recognition he fully deserves.
Victor knows that while Spain coach Vicente del Bosque still counts on Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas, he always be playing second fiddle to him. Casillas is a world-recognised keeper just like Valdes, but stoppers of this caliber have it harder as there is only one slot to fill.
