Barcelona to pay tribute to Deco

barcelona to pay tribute to deco

Anderson Luis de Souza or Deco, as most Barca fans will know him, will be one of the stars invited to the Barca vs Athletic Madrid match next Sunday. In fact, Barcelona football club plans to pay tribute to the great player, something that the club wasn’t able to offer him in 2008 when he left the ranks of Barca for a new life as a Chelsea player in West London.

At the moment, the Barcelona staff and board are busy studying ways in which would be the most appropriate way to pay homage to an outstanding player who gave his best to the Catalan club but who left through the back door when Pep Guardiola took over from Dutchman Frank Rijkaard in 2008.

The Brazilian, who played for the club between 2004 and 2008, excelled in his first two years as a Barca player, where he won two Spanish league titles and the UEFA Champions League in Paris 2006. Then, after failing to win anything the following two seasons, Deco decided to accept a good offer from Russian magnate Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea, in the wake of the breakdown of Barcelona’s first eleven under Rijkaard.

Without a shadow of a doubt, many of Deco’s fans will remember the consistency and sheer class he brought to the Barca midfield to make them champions. Deco, along with Ronaldinho, Puyol and Eto’o, was one of the key players involved in the Catalan club’s winning of the Champions League in Paris. Fans who remember the match against Arsenal will remember the gunner’s keeper Jens Lehmann being sent off early in the first half with Sol Campbell putting his team ahead just before half time.

Samuel Eto’o equalized for the Catalans near the end of the match with Juliano Belletti scoring minutes later to snatch a 2-1 victory for Barca. This was Barcelona’s second win in the competition, the first being 14 years after winning their first European Cup in 1992.

Deco’s great friend Ronaldhino managed to say farewell to the Barca fans in the Joan Gamper Trophy of 2010. Now it is the turn of Deco to say his farewell.
