Luis Suarez just had his most successful season in the EPL scoring 33 goals for Liverpool and winning the PFA player of the year award when he decided to make a shock move to FC Barcelona.
The transfer deal to Barcelona which reportedly amounted to €94 million was officially made known to the public after the World Cup in Brazil. However, he wasn’t able to play for Barca at the beginning of the season because of a suspension imposed by FIFA on him after he was found guilty of biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during a match in Brazil.
After serving his suspension, Suarez made his debut in Barcelona in the first El Clasico of the season. Barca lost that match 3-1 and he made little impact in the match. His goal drought for Barca continued for four matches and doubts about his abilities and suitability to the team began to emerge. But just like what he did many times before, he proved all the doubters and haters wrong once again. He scored his first goal for Barca in the Champions League during their second group stage encounter versus APOEL. His lone goal of the match was enough for Barca to secure the win. Then two weeks after, he scored Barca’s winning goal in their rematch against PSG in the UCL. Slowly, he was beginning to win the confidence of Barcelona fans.
He proved his reliability once again by scoring the second goal in their La Liga match versus Atletico. Like in the previous matches, he’s now beginning to show that he can work well with Neymar and Messi up front. Then on February 24, Suarez proved that he’s worth every penny Barca spent for him after scoring two goals against Manchester City in their first UCL round of 16 clash. The Uruguayan continues to prove his effectivity, scoring the winning goal in the second El Clasico and netting two more goals against PSG in the first leg of their quarterfinal clash. So far, Suarez never fails to deliver whenever Barca needs him. It should also be noted that Barcelona have won all the matches in which Suarez scored a goal.
The 28 year old Uruguayan striker’s contract for Barca runs up to five years. But with still a month remaining on his first season, he has already scored 19 goals in 35 appearances. And from the looks of it, he’ll become a more effective striker for the Catalans in the future.
