Late Busquets strike seals win for FC Barcelona

valencia vs barcelona 2014

A late strike from Sergio Busquets saved a lot of red faces on Sunday as Barcelona beat Valencia away in their La Liga match. It was a good win for the Catalan giants who now sit just 2 points behind Real Madrid.

It was a killer blow for Valencia who had impressed throughout the match only for Sergio to pop up late into extra time with a volley to seal the deal. Diego Alves made a great save to stop Neymar’s header going in only for the ball to come to Busquets who neatly volleyed it into the back of the net.

Leo Messi was also struck on the head by a plastic bottle while celebrating the winner. This comes after the sad news of the fan that died in the clashes between Atlético Madrid and Deportivo La Coruña. It was also a first home defeat for Valencia who remain in 5th position in La Liga table.

Barça didn’t have an easy time against Valencia and Claudio Bravo had to be at his very best to thwart efforts from Alvaro Negredo and Sofiane Feghouli late into the game.

FC Barcelona boss Luis Enrique didn’t feel that luck was a factor in his side’s 1 nil win:

“I don’t feel like lady luck fell on our side because we scored a good goal and created it from a set-piece. It wasn’t luck, we had to dominate them and control their transitions, so I am very thankful to the players,” said the manager. “We had faith until the end at a very difficult place to come to and where no one had won before today.”

Meanwhile Valencia boss Nuno Espiritu Santo, was left to lament the chances Valencia failed to convert in the second-half of the game.

“We had good moments in the match and very clear opportunities to score. Barça also had chances to give them their due,” he said. “But we had such clear chances and could easily have won.”
