Cesc Fabregàs signs for Chelsea

With Cesc Fabregàs finally on his way out of the Camp Nou and off to Stamford Bridge to begin a new chapter in his career, Barcelona have spectacularly criticised the player for his past performances at the Blaugrana club.

Cesc left Barça’s famed Masia youth program to join North London club Arsenal in 2003 only to return to his beloved Barcelona in 2011. Fabregàs is now set for his second spell in the Premier League as Chelsea confirmed on Thursday that the 27 year old Catalan is now a Blue.

FC Barcelona posted a statement on their website after the news broke and, amidst the praise for the midfielder, the club criticised his performances late in the seasons whilst at the Catalan giants. FourFourTwo magazine says:

The club’s statement read: “There has been a downward trend in his stats every season at the club.”
“He slipped right back into the Football Club Barcelona system as if he’d never been away.
“But despite glowing starts to each campaign, Cesc’s contributions to the cause gradually decreased as each season drew to a close.
“From being someone who joined in with the attack, supplying and scoring goals, the magic tended to fade later on in each season.
“He only scored one, six and one goals in the last 24 games of each season.
“For some reason, he was never as good in the second half of a season as in the first.”

It’s not the nicest way to send off one of your star players who returned from the Premier League to feature in his boyhood club, I’m sure you will agree. Fabregàs’ overall record of 42 goals in 151 matches for Barcelona is pretty alright for a midfielder in our books, even if his scoring did wane a tad later on.

Fabregàs will be missed at Barcelona for sure and ex teammate Xavi Hernández has signalled that “Losing Cesc is a great loss to Barcelona”. Xavi has been offered €8.3 million a year to play in Qatar so he could be the next one to leave as Barça would like to get shot of the midfielder as he is one of the club’s highest earners.
