Barcelona’s number one keeper Victor Valdés was carried off the pitch after suffering an injury to his right calf in a match against South Africa where Spain lost by a goal to nil. Victor Valdes was a second half substitution for Iker Casillas in the friendly against South Africa in the Soccer City.
After a medical examination, it was confirmed that the Barca keeper has suffered a tear to his right calf muscle, which means he will be out of action for a month to six weeks.
The Catalan club’s medical staff have been alerted and we should hear more news throughout the day as to the real extent of his injury and how long he’ll be sidelined.
Victor Valdés was injured in his own area just fifteen minutes before the final whistle. It is still unclear however as to how it was caused and had to be carried off the pitch with Pepe Reina coming on in his place.
There was some controversy too as the Barca keeper’s injury caused mayhem on the pitch as Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque had already used up his substitutes. Much to the annoyance of the South African coach, the referee allowed Spain to bring Pepe Reina on.
Meanwhile Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo made sure of Portugal’s ticket to Brazil for the World Cup next year with a stellar performance against Sweden in the play-offs where the Portuguese won by 3 goals to 2. Ronaldo netted all three of his country’s goals to secure their place.
Lionel Messi has also picked up the “Golden Boot” award as the highest goal scorer in Europe this year. “It’s a very nice prize for me and the team. It is a recognition for the whole team. There are many goals and I just would not have achieved them on my own.”
“I dedicate this to my family, the people who love me in the hardest times. I also take the opportunity to thank the team for being here and I wouldn’t have won it without you,” said the Argentine.
