Barca crushes a weak Santos by eight goals to nil

Barcelona crushed a weak Santos last night in the Nou Camp by an extraordinary eight goals to nothing. The game turned out to be a mere practice sessions for the Catalans exhibiting their own style of football which was reminiscent of Guardiola’s first months in charge of the club.

Santos were no match for the new Barca of Gerardo Martino and the fans got a glimpse of what Messi and Neymar could be like together, looking ahead to the new season. There were a few nice touches by both players which served as a small offering of what this Barca offers for the coming season.

Although the match was just a bit of a pre-season knock about, it did serve to show some of the things you can expect from this new Barca. Martino had insisted to his players on the importance of recovering the ball along with the suffocating pressure to exert on the opponent.

That was Guardiola’s hallmark in his first season as coach. The game against Santos served to see that Martino’s message is serious.

Martino did not wish to start the double act everyone came to see. The first half was for Messi and the second half for Neymar. The two South Americans coincided on the pitch for just 15 minutes, at the start of the second half.

The Brazilian was generous with the ball and not afraid to take on his old teammates. Neymar was always looking for the player who was best-positioned. If he keeps that spirit up, he’s going to be a valuable piece in Barca’s first team.

The game also served as a showpiece for two players whose performance was not up to par last season. Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas gave 110% at this edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy. Alexis scored one and Cesc found the net twice.

What could not be assessed in this clash was the state of the Barca defense. Barca has a suspect defense problem at the back but it was difficult to tell in this game. The problem will have to be taken into account against more demanding opposition as Santos hardly tested the Catalans.

Sandro Rosell himself has promised the arrival of a defender before the month finishes. With a little luck, a deal could be struck while the club is on tour in Asia.
