Villa and Alexis brace turn Cordoba dream into nightmare

alexis and villa celebrate

A brace of goals by David Villa and Alexis Sánchez along with a goal from Thiago to get the ball rolling finished off Córdoba’s possibilities of making it into the next round of the Copa del Rey last night.

The game ended 5-0 to Barca and Leo Messi didn’t even get to come off the bench as Sergi Roberto was injured thus making assistant coach Jordi Roura change his tactics.

It was a typical Barca night out with thrills, spills and plenty of goals.Thiago got on the scoreboard first after 17 minutes to stun the green and white’s from Córdoba. David Villa made it 2-0 after 21 minutes minutes and quickly followed with his second on minute 26. That made it 3-0 to Barca and the game was beginning to look like a goal-fest.

Córdoba was limited to running after the ball to try and cut the damage that an awesome Barca was inflicting. Córdoba was hemorrhaging and couldn’t do much about it against a side that was at home and out to prove a point.

The second half started the same way and on minute 55 Alexis Sánchez managed to find the back of the net. Alexis missed quite a few chances in last night’s game and tried to maintain the pulse with Villa for the first team place. The Chilean international could have had three or four but had to make do with a brace and found the net again towards the end of the game on 85 minutes. Both Alexis and Villa need playing time on the pitch and Roura gave it to them. They both responded with a couple of goals each which gains them extra points in favour of winning back their first team place. This game can only be good for both players’ confidence.

Pinto didn’t have much to do in goal and could have read the Hobbit while he was there. The only one to cause minimum fuss was Joselu and we should take our hats off to the young Córdoba player for trying to amend the scoreline that was increasing fast.

Next up Barca meets Málaga in the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey next week and whoever comes out of that tie will meet the winner of the Real Madrid vs Valencia game.
