Messi breaks record to beat Betis 2-1

FC Barcelona was made to sweat last night to take all three points from the Benito Villamarin stadium against a very good Betis side. The Catalans had to rely on their best player, Lionel Messi who scored twice, to give them victory and break the record of ‘Der Bomber’ Gerd Müller at the same time. Betis, with three shots hitting the posts deserved a lot of merit for making Tito’s team suffer like they did.

Fortunately for the Catalans, Leo Messi was able to play this game, with the Argentine’s participation being decisive. With his two goals on the scoreboard, it seemed to make the difference as on the pitch it was pretty much even with the home team making life very difficult for Barca.

With audacity, intensity along with some good players, Betis knew how to disarm Barca like few teams have been able to do this season. It was a ‘mano a mano’ fight which the team from Seville played with a lot of intensity in order to prevent the Catalans having too much of the ball.

From the kickoff, it took Betis a while to execute their plan and Messi scored two goals in less than half an hour. It looked at this stage like the match was going to be a cakewalk for the club. But nothing was further from the truth. Betis managed to get on the scoreboard thanks to a goal from Ruben Castro just before the break to get back into the game.

The slim margin on the scoreboard in favour of Barca set the second half up for an exciting game. Betis went all out and had Barca in trouble. Several great stops by the Barca keeper Valdés along with Betis hitting the post no less than three times prevented the team from Seville from drawing the match.

Barca could have finished the game off in a few counter attacks but they lacked effectiveness against the stubborn Betis side. The Catalans also managed to hit the woodwork twice and although Betis made them suffer, the two goals from Messi and a cool head under pressure, was enough to secure the three points for Barca.

Barca coach Tito Vilanova knew what to expect from Pep Mel’s terrific Betis side as he said in a press conference the day before. Betis played hard, they were quick and stubborn but in the end it was Tito and his boys that came away with 3 points.
