Ex Barcelona FC coach Pep Guardiola is looking more and more the likely successor and candidate to step into the hot seat at Manchester United and take over from Sir Alex Ferguson.
Guardiola is still on his “sabbatical” and would be a real catch for Manchester United if the Catalan maestro were to follow in Fergie’s footsteps.
Word on the street is that Pep is ready to turn down Roman Abramovich’s industrial sized checkbook and head north of London to the Theatre of Dreams.
It seems that the Chelsea owner wanted to Pep to take the reigns at Chelsea next summer.
Pep, who is living in New York at the moment and on a sabbatical, would relish a move to Manchester United when Sir Alex retires. The Red Devils boss may retire at the end of this season but Guardiola would hold out for another season just in case it doesn’t happen.
Guardiola: the perfect choice for Manchester United
The ex Barca boss would be the ideal candidate to take over at Manchester United. The attacking style of United is reminiscent of Barca’s flair and Sir Alex has been a long-standing admirer of the beautiful football that Guardiola coaxed out of his side
The two men know each other well and have even “coincided” in New York when Fergie went out there a few months’ back.
A source close to the ex Barcelona coach said:
“The whole history of Manchester United, his relationship with Sir Alex and the way the club is run appeals to Pep.
“Right now I’d be astonished if he went to Chelsea. He really wants to wait for the United job even if it means extending his time out of the game.”
The setup at United would appeal to the Catalan, too. He’d be in control without interference from the board. This would be in stark contrast to what is happening at Chelsea. Interim boss Rafa Benitez is Chelsea’s ninth manager in 10 years and this type of football dictatorship would not appeal to Pep Guardiola in the least.
The Red Devils would be the perfect club for Guardiola and he would no doubt, with his own special brand of input, make it an even better club than it is now.
