Magical Messi last night became the first player to bag five goals in a Champions League game last night. As Barca tore into Leverkusen the game ended up 7-1 to Barcelona with Leo grabbing five of them! Messi, 24, bettered his own record of four goals against Arsenal in April 2010.
The Argentine maestro is now fourth on the all-time goals list for the competition with a total of 49 behind Raul (71), Ruud van Nistelrooy (56) and Thierry Henry (50).
Ex Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregás said after the game: “Leo is the best player in history — we have never seen anyone like him.”
Before the break Messi stuck two goals in and gave Leverkusen some hope of turning things around in the second half. It was not to be however and Leo struck three more times with Barca new boy Cristian Tello bringing up the rear with a nice brace of goals to make it seven in total.
Not to be outdone, Leverkusen’s Karim Bellarabi gave the shell-shocked away fans something to cheer about in the last minute. Barcelona go through to the next round making it 10-2 on aggregate!
On another note, the other Champions League game last played night with Apoel Nicosia against Lyon ended 1-1 on aggregate but the Cypriot team go through after beating the French outfit 4-3 on penalties. Gustavo Manduca’s goal made it 1-1 on aggregate.
Regarding the Europa League clash tonight against Manchester United and Bielsa’s Athletic Bilbao, Fergie will field a very strong side to try and catch the Basque team off-guard although it’s going to prove a tough game as Bilbao are really “up for this one”.
