Messi’s goal in the 65th minute was enough for Barcelona not just to win their match over Atletico Madrid, but also to secure the Liga title for this season. Both sides played very well on both halves, but the Catalans were obviously the more dangerous side all throughout the match. However, it took them 65 minutes before they can finally break down Atletico’s defense and put the ball at the back of the net. The match ended 0-1 in favor of Barcelona.
With the win over Atletico, Barcelona are now officially the Liga champions for the 2014-15 season. Their victory last night kept them four points clear from Real Madrid. Both clubs still have one match to play in the Liga, but their outcome will have no more effect on their final standings. Even if Barca lose their last match and Real Madrid win it, they will still be a point above Ancelotti’s side in the table. This is Barca’s seventh Liga title in just a span of ten years.
In the other match, the Los Blancos also won against Espanyol 4-1 with Ronaldo scoring another hat trick. But that spectacular win is now meaningless after Barcelona won against Atletico. Real’s unexpected 2-2 draw with Valencia last week proved to be another crucial event in this season’s title race. If Real have only won that match, they will still be head to head with Barcelona today for the title.
Barcelona ended last season without any trophy and now the prospect of a treble are very big. They’re the favorites to win the Copa del Rey and the Champions League title. They’ll be up against Athletic Bilbao on the Spanish Cup final on May 30 and on June 6 they’ll face Juventus in Berlin for the Champions League final. Both of their opponents are seen as underdogs by most experts and Barca clearly has the upper hand in both fixtures.
Luis Enrique has really turned Barcelona back into the club it once was during Pep Guardiola’s time. Clearly, winning the Liga title is just a step into the bigger goal that they want to attain this season which is the treble.
