Ex Barcelona player Eric Abidal says that Argentine superstar Leo Messi will not leave the club despite lots of rumours floating around the internet speculating about his future at the Nou Camp.
Abidal says in less poetic language that Messi will not “screw the club over” as he believes he will stay at the club until he hangs his boots up.
Lots of things have happened at the club in the past few weeks and it has been quite a turbulent season for the Catalan giants so far. One of the greatest upsets for the club has been that the FIFA ban was upheld by the court of arbitration for sport which means that the club won’t be signing any new talent until January 2016. In the wake of the outcome, Andoni Zubizarreta’s head was first on the block quickly followed by the resignation of Carles Puyol. Rumours suggested problems with Messi and Luis Enrique and the Argentine started following Chelsea on Instagram to add fuel to the speculations.
Eric Abidal said of Leo Messi: “I know Leo well.” “He is a well educated guy, he’s not here to screw the club and others. He has character, he respects people.”
“As he put it, he’s at Barca, but doesn’t know what tomorrow brings. That’s sport. But yes, I believe he will finish his career at Barcelona and I hope he stays.”
“Barça’s his home and he has already shown what he can do on the field.”
Despite a turbulent year for the Catalans they aren’t doing too badly in La Liga. They are just a point behind Real Madrid although the second half of the season is what really counts and we’ll see who has the legs to last till the end.
