Barça meet Elche no less than 3 times in January

FC Barcelona are to face Elche no less than three times this month – twice in La Copa del Rey and once in the Spanish League.

The Catalans will play their first home game this new year on thursday against Elche in the first leg of their last 16 Spanish Cup tie and this is just the first of three encounters the teams will face in two and a half weeks. The first of the cup games is tomorrow (Thursday) at the Nou Camp while the return leg will be played on 15th January at the Martínez Valero stadium in the Andalusian city of Elche, which is in the province of Alicante.

The winners of this tie will go through to face off Madrid giants – either Atlético Madrid or Real Madrid, who meet in their first leg match tonight at 19:00 GMT. This year’s Copa del Rey certainly looks exciting and anything can happen in Cup games, especially with the last 16 teams all looking for glory.

However, it looks like Barcelona have an “easy tie” as Elche are currently the worst performing team in La Liga. Elche have won just 3 games this season in all competitions, reaping just 11 points from 17 games in La Liga while in stark contrast, Barça have won 10 out of 12 games in all competitions.

Barça will then face Elche for a third time this month on 24th January in the Spanish League. The Catalans last met Elche on the first day of the season when they won by a comfortable 3 goals to nil – 2 from Messi and one from new boy Munir, which was his first goal in an official competition and his team debut, to boot!
