Ex FC Barcelona player Deco reckons that Messi won’t leave Barcelona if he’s happy. And Deco assured that if the Argentine is happy then nobody should fear him leaving as the rumours have suggested over the past week.
“I know he’ll leave one day. That’s to be expected. Everything comes to an end. I understand that all sorts of speculation arises when a great player speaks, but nobody is eternal in a team, and much less so in football. Great players and great managers come and go”, said the former Nou Camp regular in Rio de Janeiro.
The ex Barça player also hinted that sooner or later a player’s time in a top club like Barça will come to an end: “Obviously with Messi’s history at Barça, you can understand that it’s hard to see him at another club, but one day it will happen. It could be this season, in a year’s time or in five years. It will depend on lots of things.”
According to Deco, the main thing to dwell on is keeping the little man happy at the Nou Camp and if the club can do that, there’s no fear of losing him anytime soon: “All I think is that players like Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar need to be happy to perform at their best. That’s the big secret. If Messi is happy, he’ll stay. If he’s not, he’ll look at other options. Messi needs to be happy, to be content.”
Deco was also asked about Messi’s records: “That’s not what drives him. I know him well. He’s never been the type of guy who’s interested in individual records. He’s not selfish. He’s a player who is used to winning all the time.”
Just four days after Messi broke Telmo Zarra’s record of La Liga goals, Messi broke Raúl’s record of 71 goals in the Champions League and now has 74. It’s an incredible feat for the little Argentine who’s continuing to break records. Let’s hope that Messi continues to bring in the goods and is content to stay at Barça.
