FC Barcelona star Gerard Piqué has dealt a hammer blow to Manchester United by quashing rumours that he could return to Old Trafford.
It was felt that the defender could return to the Red Devils after rumours spread that he was out of favour at the Nou Camp but the Daily Mail now reports that Piqué is happy at he Nou Camp and wants to finish his career off there.
What’s more, the 27 year old has revealed that he would like to hang up his boots at the Catalan giants just like teammate Carles Puyol.
What sparked the rumours is the fact that Piqué has been overlooked this season by new boss Luis Enrique. The player has only made 3 starts so far this season and has effectively fallen behind the pecking order with Enrique preferring his new signing Jeremy Mathieu paired up with Argentine Javier Mascherano. Despite this setback, Piqué insists he is enjoying life in the Catalan capital and at the club.
“I love this club for its history, its style of play and its connection to Catalonia,” Pique said.
“I love it here. I am at the best club in the world right now. I have no intention of leaving now or later. I’ve just signed a new contract and I want to retire a Blaugrana, just like Puyol did.
“You never know what the future holds, but right now, I love this city, I love the people in the club, and most importantly, I love the institution. I don’t see myself leaving.”
As the player said above – “you never know what the future holds”. A player of his stature will obviously weigh up the situation and if he continues to be the fall guy then he will have no other option but to leave the Nou Camp. It would be nice to see him in another league and I think the fans will like it too. Certain players need to try other leagues in my opinion, not just for proving to themselves that they can cut it, but to the fans, too.
