According to reports coming out of Spain this Wednesday morning, Arsenal FC are reportedly interested in Barcelona’s Sergi Samper. The Gunners have a history of signing Barça prospects at an early age and one only has to look what they did to Cesc Fàbregas – they turned him into a superstar.
Spanish sports paper Mundo Deportivo reports today that the north London club are very interested in signing 19 year-old Sergi Samper. MD report that Arsenal tried 3 years ago to sign the midfielder when they persuaded Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral to make a move from the Nou Camp.
Although the midfielder has yet to make an appearance for the Catalan giants, he has signed a professional contract with them.
Mundo Deportivo reports: “A few days ago, Arsenal returned to communicate their desire to bring him to Arsenal, but this time for the first team and willing to pay the €12 million buyout clause of Samper’s current contract with the club, which expires in June 2017.”
However the headlines of today’s MD say that “even though Arsene Wenger is insisting, Sergi Samper has one thing clear: it’s Barça”
The youngster had a good season last year, notching up 40 games out of 42 for the Barcelona B team. Sergi Samper looks like he’ll be drafted into the full squad sooner rather than later by Luis Enrique as FIFA’s 2 transfer window ban kicks in.
Wenger has a good eye for young players, especially from Barcelona but this time he may miss out on the young prospect. However, if he doesn’t fit into the new coach’s plans, Barcelona should loan him out and Arsenal would be a great club to ship him out to. Wenger certainly knows how to treat young players and if Fàbregas is anything to go by, he’ll do a great job.
