Several of the top coaches met up in Nyon on Wednesday for the annual meeting for teams that play in UEFA competitions and the photographers were interested in getting a snap of two former players that went on to coach the first team – Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique.
Guardiola, who currently manages Bayern Muncih had kind words for the ex Roma boss and feels his tenure at Barcelona will be greater than his own. However, Luis Enrique certainly has his work cut out as Guardiola guided the Catalan giants to an impressive 14 trophies between 2008 and 2012, which included three La Liga titles and two Champions League victories.
“Of course he can match me at Barcelona, I think very highly of him. He will do a better job than I did,” Catalan sports paper Sport quotes Guardiola as saying.
“It is important for Barcelona to have its own identity again, a philosophy that we all recognise. I think we will see just that under Luis Enrique.”
The two ex Barça players were team-mates at the Nou Camp between 1996 and 2001 before Guardiola left for a stint in Italy with Brescia.
We will have to wait and see if Luis Enrique is anything like Pep Guardiola and only time will tell. In the four years that Guardiola had control at Barcelona, he revolutionised the club and got them playing a style of football that was admired all over the world. As we have said before, Luis Enrique has his work cut out and to become greater than Guardiola, he will have to show the same passion for the club as Pep did. Good luck with that Luis Enrique!
