It has been confirmed that the Catalan giants have reached an agreement with São Paulo over the transfer of little known player Douglas Pereira. No official announcements have been made by Barça but the transfer has gone through for the sum of €8M euros.
However, it seems highly unlikely the 24 year old defender will join FC Barcelona this campaign, but rather next season. One thing that could bring him to the club sooner rather than later is the exit of Dani Alves, but that seems unlikely at the moment.
Brazilian Alves has not had any offers that would guarantee him what he earns at Barcelona (around €9M euros) and the 31 year old would like to stay on and see his current contract out that expires in 2015 which would leave him as a free agent. Once he is free to go, he will have many clubs chasing him for sure.
The signing of Douglas Pereira has already posed a few questions amongst the media. Firstly, the player is already 24 years old, so what has happened to the players coming up through La Masia? Secondly, Douglas is unknown and hasn’t even been capped by his country, Brazil, so what happened there?
Apparently nobody knew that Barça were even following the player, let alone buy him for €8M euros. Let’s hope the club is right about Douglas and he proves to be a hidden gem.
