Jordi Gómez finds the net for Wigan against Man City

FC Barcelona will receive a “damaged” Manchester City on Wednesday for the second leg clash of their last 16 Champions League match.

Pellegrini’s men fell at the last hurdle in the English FA Cup, going out to Wigan by 2 goals to 1. Wigan are the actual holders of the FA Cup and it’s the second time in two years that the humble side have beaten the Manchester outfit.

Pellegrini sidelined most of his top players with Joe Hart, Zabaleta, Kolarov, David Silva along with Fernandinho, being left out of the starting 11. But it was only after Wigan found the net twice, leaving Manchester City reeling in its wake, that Manuel Pellegrini decided to change tack.

It was Argentine Martin Demichelis that shot his team in the foot with a clumsy challenge in the box that sent Marc-Antoine Fortuné to the ground. Jordi Gómez stepped up to the spot and made no mistake with the spot kick. Just after half time, James Perch found the net for Wigan and City were damaged. Pellegrini had to do something to rescue this match with Wednesday’s clash against Barça looming on the horizon.

The City manager then went for bust and brought out David Silva, James Milner and Edin Dzeko for Jesús Navas, Yaya Touré and Álvaro Negredo. In the 67th minute Scott Carson was beaten by a lovely strike from Samir Nasri just outside the box. That made it 1-2 but the clock was ticking down for City.

Pellegrini’s men weren’t able to turn things around and now say goodbye to the FA Cup, one of four trophies they were after this year. What’s worse for City is that they face Barça at the Camp Nou on Wednesday and could be dumped out of the Champions League, too.
