Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima or as we know him better, Ronaldo, has heaped praise on defensive legend Carles Puyol, who announced this week that he was leaving the Catalan club at the end of the season.
The Former Barcelona and Real Madrid star has nothing but praise for the veteran and even compared Puyol to Real Madrid’s Fernando Hierro, another stalwart and legend. Carles Puyol announced that he was quitting the Camp Nou at the end of the season and the former Brazilian international has nothing but praise for his old adversary.
Roanldo played for FC Barcelona for a season during the 1996/97 campaign and wouldn’t have met Puyol in the first team. He managed to find the net 34 times in 37 appearances during his stay before he moved on to Serie A giants Inter Milan.
“It took me by surprise. His status at Barcelona is like Hierro’s at Real Madrid; he’s a club icon,” Ronaldo was quoted as saying by Spanish sports newspaper, Marca.
“He has always been very loyal and polite. He is a role model. Puyol is an embodiment of fair play in football.”
The Brazilian played for Real Madrid from 2002-2007 where he netted 83 goals in 127 outings for the “Blancos”. Ronaldo briefly touched on the times when he met Carles Puyol on the pitch and admitted that the Barça defender always made life difficult for him.
“Puyol was a pain to try to get past on the pitch,” he added.
