Barcelona have joined the hunt for Eliaquim Mangala

David Moyes has sent scouts out to Portugal to see the 23 year-old and he has also been watched by Chelsea and City. Eliaquim Mangala is said to be worth around £40m and is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest stars of the future.

With Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra leaving this summer, and Rio Ferdinand set to hang up his boots, Moyes has his work cut out if he plans to rebuild a United team for the future.

The United boss has put the young Frenchman high on his wish list and believes the centre-back could enjoy a prosperous career at the Red Devils.

However, big spending neighbours Manchester City are also keen on the player and came quite close to moving in on Mangala in last month’s January transfer window.

Not to be outdone, Chelsea are also keeping one eye on the Porto star as Blues boss Jose Mourinho eyes him as a replacement for John Terry.

But, the plot thickens, as La Liga giants Barcelona have also made their interest known about the 23 year old. It is believed that Gerardo “Tata” Martino also has Eliaquim Mangala high on his summer shopping list.

Veteran defender Carles Puyol, who will be 36 in April, is heading towards the end of his stellar career at the Catalan giants and Martino has penciled the French centre-back into his list of five possible signings to replace him.

Therefore, with Manchester United still unsure of whether they’ll make a top four place and provide Mangala with Champions League football, FC Barcelona may just pip them to the post in the race for his signature.
