Barça edged their way into the final of La Copa del Rey last night by drawing 1-1 with Real Sociedad in their second leg clash.
The Catalan giants dominated the game from the start and never looked like being bothered by Real Sociedad, who they beat last week at the Camp Nou by a decisive 2 goals to nil. Barcelona created spaces and had the majority of the chances last night.
Frontman Messi got on the scoresheet first as he made one of his piercing runs to cut through the Real Sociedad defines. Messi shot from the edge of the area and stopper Enaut Zubikarai could not prevent the ball from finding its way into the back of the net.
Real Sociedad got their act together in the second half of the match and finally broke through the Barcelona defense in the 87th minute with a strike from Manchester United target Antoine Griezmann to level the game. It wasn’t enough though, as the home side lost out on aggregate 3-1.
After the game, Argentine coach Gerardo Martino said he was happy his side had qualified for the final of La Copa del Rey, which was one of the Catalan giant’s targets for the current campaign.
“There are three objectives this season and we fulfilled one of them today,” the Argentine tactician told the club’s official website. “We completed our objective. These players always play in finals.
“We had the obligation to qualify, we couldn’t miss it,” he added.
FC Barcelona will now meet eternal rivals Real Madrid in the final which is scheduled for 19th April at the Mestalla stadium, which is home for Valencia C.F.
