Lionel Messi proved why he’s one of the world’s best players with a brace of goals against Getafe last night in La Copa del Rey. Goals came in the 44th and 63rd minute of the match to seal Getafe’s fate and provide Barca with a ticket to the quarter finals of the competition. Messi second goal was vintage Leo. A searing run from outside of the box on the right ended with Messi on the left giving the keeper no chance.
Messi was once again the star of this second leg, just as he was in the first. There is no stopping this player as he has bagged four of the six goals Barça scored in this tie against Getafe.
What was worrying for the Catalans is the way Neymar Junior went over and ‘twisted his ankle’ after 27 minutes of play. He tried to pass the ball as he ran down the left side towards the touchline and went over awkwardly on it. It looks bad but we’ll have to wait to see what the Barça medics confirm later today.
Getafe played well and despite having some opportunities, the occasion was just a little too big for them. Midfielder Xavi also knocked up his 700th appearance in a Barça shirt. The azulgranas will now go head to head with Levante in the quarter finals of the competition after they managed to beat Rayo Vallecano by just a goal to nil.
