FC Barcelona tied up the loose ends with a win against minnows Cartagena to go through to the last 16 of La Copa del Rey competition. The Catalans won by a 3 goal to nil margin and goals came from Pedro, Tello and Neymar.
The Catalan giants were by far the superior team last night as Cartagena showed guts and tried to create problems for them. Barca didn’t just sit back, they also brought their A game to Cartagena to avoid any nasty surprises.
Barcelona were very insistent too, and that’s why they ended up thrashing the minnows 3 nothing. Coach Gerardo Martino was pleased with the result and praised his player’s attitude. He thought they played a serious game of football although the team wasn’t running at 100%.
It wasn’t exactly the day that Neymar had the most success in front of goal, but when talking about the Brazilian, one must wait until the final whistle to judge and assess him. The former Santos star continues to mature with his new team and is capable of proving anything with the Catalan club. Thus, the Brazilian is the only Barca player to have scored in all competitions this season.
With the first leg goal rout of the way, the only question left was how many goals would Martino’s men score last night and who would be the first todo so.
Obviously, Luis García Tevenet’s men were going to be brave. They had nothing to lose and intended to show everyone that there is still honour in all categories of football.
Although the ball was monopolised by the Catalans in the first minutes of the match, it was Cartagena who provided the first scare after a shot by Segura hit the post. From then on, with the insistence of the home side, it was only a matter of time before the goals started to find the back of the visitor’s net. Cartagena has had their moment of fame and Barca goes through to the next round.
