Martino is not using Barca’s homegrown talent

The arrival of Tata Martino has been a setback for the homegrown young Barca stars of the first team. The Argentine coach has not used Barca’s young blood in the first four league games or the Spanish Super Cup.

Among the six young starlets that Martino has at his disposal namely; Montoya, Bartra, Sergi Roberto, Tello, Dos Santos and Oier, they have only played 22 minutes between them in the last four matches. Tello played 14 minutes against Levante and Sergi Roberto played for eight minutes against Malaga. Not only that, but they haven’t even been named in the squad.

Only Cristian Tello has been called up for the four game while the rest have spent the rest of the time watching from the stands. There have been some strange cases where Martino left Bartra out of the squad for the first leg of the Supercup against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

Martino was left without a natural central defender arguing that if necessary, he would call on Busquets or Alex Song. And a similar case occurred with Montoya as neither Adriano’s injury nor suspension has opened up the doors to the first team. It appears that the new Barca coach has opted for the old guard for these first games of the season.

It was a complicated start to the season with some difficult games and a title at stake but from now on, we’ll have to see if he gives Barca’s homegrown talent more opportunities.
