West London club Chelsea will try to take advantage of Barca’s interest in Brazilian central defender David Luiz as their main objective to strengthen the defense ahead of the new season.
The Stamford Bridge club will try to play hardball with the price of the 26 year old, who is under contract with the Blues until June 2017.
The Daily Mail claimed on Saturday that Chelsea’s Russian owner Roman Abramovich, will ask for the equivalent of 46M euros for the player and yesterday, The Sunday People said the London club could even try to wrangle 52M euros out of the Catalan club.
The market price of David Luiz is currently around 29M euros, so it’s obvious that Chelsea will try to take advantage of Barca’s current needs and up the price a little.
In 2011, Chelsea paid Portuguese outfit Benfica 26.4M euros for the transfer of the player, which is approximately half of what is now required for the defender that is not exactly in Jose Mourinho’s good books.
Barcelona now expect David Luiz to try and force a transfer and lower his salary to enable the intended operation to come to fruition.
The summer transfer market closes on August 31 and Chelsea will not make it easy for Barca to sign the Brazilian.
Barca’s other options
Agger (Liverpool), Kompany (Manchester City), Vermaelen (Arsenal) and Vertonghen (Tottenham) are the other options that the Catalan club has to play with should any deal with David Luiz fall through.

5avid “uiz is one of the young players introduced in Chelsea’s defence to make up for the ageing players like; like John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Essien. Why should MOU be in a hurry to distabilise the team again? David almost single handedly marshalled the defence. We the supporters almost died of heart break in the way and manner the defence crumbled at the dead of regulation time few years ago. This was prononced from the era of Coach Andrae Villa Boas. Why should MOU pick interest in the defence that has exceeded their prime. I would advice MOU to retain Luize and train him to play according to his pattern of play. Some time when he was the coach handling Chesea Fc, he converted Mikel Obi to from box to box player to a holding midfielder. Please sign a player that can play to MOU’s taste and play him along side David at least for a season before thinking of selling David. Leave David alone and save us from conceeding dying minutes goals.
