Sergio Busquets renews until 2018

FC Barcelona’s sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta, has announced that the Catalan club has reached an agreement with defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets to renew his contract until 2018 with an option to extend it for one more year.

At a press conference in Barcelona sitting beside coach Tito Vilanova, Andoni Zubizarreta explained that the player will have a buyout clause of 150 million euros. With the extension of Busquets’ contract, who turned 25 yesterday, Barcelona now turns its attention to the renewals of Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique.

Sergio Busquets joined the Barca first team in 2008 and was relatively unknown till then.The player worked hard and eventually made a name for himself on the pitch with both Barca and the Spanish national team where he was called up a year after.The player was a key figure in Spain’s winning the 2010 Euro Tournament.

During the 2009/10 season, Busquets continued to progress at Barcelona which led to Pep Guardiola preferring him to Yaya Touré as the Catalan giants role of holding midfielder.

Busquets is a vastly improved player and has been a real asset to the Catalan club. He came to the club working his way up from the youth ranks and found a spot for himself in the first team.

Just last year, Sergio Busquets scored a rare goal, finding the goal from an easy tap-in after a cross from Isaac Cuenca to make it 1–0 for the Catalans in their Champions League semifinals’ second leg against West London side, Chelsea. However, Barca could only draw 2–2 against a ten men Chelsea side, losing 2–3 on aggregate.
