Brazilian fans fall at Neymar’s feet at Confederations Cup

On Saturday’s match between Brazil and Italy, all you could hear was “Neymar, Neymar, Neymar,” from the Brazilian fans. The new Barcelona player had the Brazil fans at his feet and the Brazilian star broke the curse against Italy of Brazil’s recent history with free kicks.

For almost two years, Brazil hasn’t been able to find the net against any team with a free kick. The last free kick Brazil scored came courtesy of Ronaldinho in the 2-1 win over Mexico in a friendly played in the United States in October 2011.

Brazil began the Confederations Cup with a distinct lack of goals, which amounted to 842 minutes. The drought ended in the third minute of the opener against Japan, when the young Barca player opened the scoring with a right-footed volley that earned him the title of MVP of the game, the first of three that he has achieved in this first phase of the tournament.

Neymar scored another volley against Mexico and rounded it off against Italy to demonstrate that he is the real leader of the Brazilian team today.

“Neymar knows his responsibility and his importance to our team. He knows he has to make a difference, to be a leader. We know what he brings to our team, and we hope he will bring even more,” confessed fellow Barca team mate Dani Alves after Saturday’s match.

At the end of the game against the Italy side, Neymar had to go out and greet a crowd that cheered him while the screens around the stadium were announcing his name as MVP of the match.

At this edition of the Confederations Cup, young Neymar has shown a more mature and self-confident side as well as being on target. He has equalled the goal records of Muller, Ronaldo and Kluivert, who have all scored 14 goals in a season with their respective national sides.

Anyone who saw the game on Saturday was certainly impressed with Neymar’s maturity. He led his side to victory and made the difference. Every now and then along comes a player who can make or break a side, Neymar is the latest addition to this list of gifted footballers.
