Bartomeu: “Cesc will only go if he wants to”

Cesc Fabregas emerged on Sunday as the main character during the XXI Meeting of the Penyes of Maresme (Maresme supporters club). The meeting was held on Sunday in a little town outside Barcelona called Arenys de Munt and taking advantage of the presence of sports vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu, all Cesc’s relatives, friends and acquaintances wanted to know first hand about the rumors that put Cesc in the Premier League next season.

One of those who spoke to Bartomeu, who was very gracious with all the club members, was Alex Soler, Cesc’s grandfather. Asking about his grandson, the sports vice president’s response was blunt: “Cesc will only leave Barca if he wants to.”

Bartomeu thus transmitted to Cesc’s family and friends what the player knows from Tito Vilanova’s own mouth; that the club is counting on him for next season and they will only listen to offers if Cesc wants to. This means that the club will not place Fabregás on the market or move a finger to get rid of him because the coach believes he is a “key piece” in the team for next season.

A different story would be that Cesc, for whatever reason, asks the club to provide him with an exit to return to Arsenal or join Manchester United – two teams that have publicly shown an interest in making with the services of the Barca midfielder.  Arsene Wenger has repeatedly shown an interest in having Cesc back and more recently the ‘Red Devils’ former player and now ambassador Denis Irwin, who said:  “United would move heaven and earth to get Cesc”.

According to Spanish sports paper Mundo Deportivo, this will not happen. Cesc will continue playing for Barca. Basically this is for two reasons. Firstly, Fabregas believes that the Camp Nou has not seen the best of him and he is convinced that he will be playing much better next season.

Also, he wants to become an important piece that is decisive in Barca’s victories and will not stop until he becomes it.

The second reason has to do with his family. On April 11th, just minutes after eliminating PSG in the Champions League, his partner Daniella gave birth to their first child and Cesc Fabregás thinks that it is not the right time to move the whole family.

So for the time being, although United have offered big money for the Barca midfielder, he’s staying put.
