Eric Abidal: “If Barca hasn’t called me, it’s because it doesn’t want me to continue”

Eric Abidal is beginning to feel that his immediate future is not going to be at FC Barcelona according to Spanish sports paper Marca. The Catalan club has not yet spoken to him about the possible renewal of his contract, which expires in June. For Abidal, that is a clear sign that that they do not want to continue with his services at the club.

The defender has already explained his feelings in the Barca dressing room. A few days ago he commented to one of his colleagues: “If they still haven’t called me with the season drawing to an end, it means that they don’t want me to continue at the club.”

The only news Abidal has from the Catalan giants are the words uttered by sports vice president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, who said in an interview that the player had stipulated in his contract that if a certain percentage of games during the season were played, then his contract would be automatically renewed for another season.

Apart from these statements by Bartomeu, the French footballer has had no other news from the board and therefore sees his continuity at the Catalan club complicated.

Eric Abidal’s agent, David Venditelli, also reflected last Tuesday on the uncertainty of the future of the footballer: “We will accept any decision taken by the club, but the worst thing is the uncertainty that exists at this time.”

“We have been trying to plan a meeting since February with President Sandro Rosell and we are still waiting”.

Given the events that have happened at the Catalan club these past few months and the overhaul the club wants to make, Eric Abidal could not fit into the future plans of Barca.

If the club doesn’t need his services they should tell him straight and not beat around the bush. I’m sure the French international would be able to find another team as his experience would be invaluable.
