Arsenal still very much interested in David Villa

North London club Arsenal has begun to sound the name of Barca striker David Villa again who the club desperately wanted to sign in the January transfer window.

According to London daily newspaper ‘Metro’, the Gunners are contemplating a new offensive for the Spanish star who doesn’t seem to be fitting in with the plans of number 2 coach Jordi Roura who didn’t start last night’s game but instead came off the bench to replace Fabregás in the 13th minute of the second half.

The striker from Asturias in the north of Spain, who was warming up on the touchline for quite a while and whose name was chanted by Barca’s followers, finally came on for Cesc in the 59th minute with 0-2 on the scoreboard.

Other circumstances that seem to be fueling the Gunners optimism according to ‘Metro’ are the words of Josep Maria Bartomeu on Monday ‘s television program ‘La Porteria’ stating that the Catalan club would not retain 31 year-old David Villa against his will.

FC Barcelona vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu said,

“The coaches trust that David Villa will continue here next season, but if he the player isn’t comfortable we’ll find a solution.”

Last January FC Barcelona declared that David Villa was intransferable as explained by Arsène Wenger which ultimately led to the Gunners throwing in the towel regarding making a move for Villa.

Arseblog had this to say about the rumour of the player being signed by Arsenal:

“David Villa – Barcelona say they won’t sell, but then every club says that about every player they don’t really want to sell but would sell if the price was right.”

David Villa has a contract with FC Barcelona until June 2014.

If Villa is not figuring in the plans of either Jordi Roura nor Tito Vilanova then the best thing for him would be to leave. Arsenal would be the perfect club for the Spanish hitman and would team up very well with both Santi Cazorla and Mikel Arteta. It would be a shame to waste the obvious talent of David Villa at Barca as it looks as if he is confined to the bench and used at the whim of Roura and Vilanova.

It may have been a good idea to bring the forward on earlier in the match instead of waiting for Madrid to put 2 goals in the net.

  1. cant see it happening to be honest. he will be 32 come christmas…. Wenger has never been one for buying 30 somethings….

  2. Wardy might have a point, Wenger’s not the type to buy older players no matter how good they are.

  3. @Wardy, remember Davor Suker? It will be worth the risk if the price is right and if Wenger believes in a younger striker in our current squad coming through soon. Fingers crossed though

  4. Would be a good signing, I don’t understand why Barca are not playing him, Sanchez and Pedro are not having a good season, and Iniesta is less effective on the wing.
