Ex Brazil coach Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo has stated in an interview published today by the Brazilian newspaper Correio Braziliense that Lionel Messi is “the best ever”, but has asked not to compare him to the great Pele – as “there was only one.”
Messi “is the best player in the world for what for what he has achieved and does for his club Barcelona but, please, do not compare him to Pele,” said 81 year old Zagallo. The ex Brazil trainer is the only person ever to win four World Cups (1958 and 1962 as a player, in 1970 as coach and in 1994 as technical coordinator).
According to Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo, “no one is ever going to score 1,281 goals,” like Pelé did. However, on the other hand he said, that while Pelé won three World Cups with his country, Messi has yet to be a World Cup winner with Argentina – an achievement that “elevates the category of a player.”
If Zagallo’s forecasts are worth reading into, Messi will neither be a World Cup champion with his national team at the 2014 World Cup to be held in Brazil. “We will win this World Cup come what may and it would be unacceptable to lose two World Cups at home, “said Zagallo referring to the 1950 World Cup final in which Brazil lost to Uruguay at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro and which will play host to another World Cup final in 2014.

Pele is a great player during his own time, but by then football was not as it is today. Messi is a great player forever.
